Marketing Campaigns make companies memorable. They give a brand personality, and, most importantly, if done right - emotion.
The most viral videos or images online are just marketing campaigns that created emotion with which the entire world resonated. Then, it became less about marketing and more about the product itself.
A campaign itself doesn't include all marketing efforts a brand does. In fact, you can easily run several marketing campaigns at the same time (think about Nike's SuperBowl Campaign and Nike's Sneakers Campaign that ran at the same time, with two very different goals in mind).
